The wall inside the brain: overestimation of distances crossing the former Iron Curtain.

چکیده

A study of distance estimations between German cities investigated the organization of mental maps and their specific deviations from reality. Potential factors for the deviation of mental maps from reality are physical barriers, emotional involvement, and semantic unity. Distance estimations between cities situated in different former parts of Germany (East or West) were systematically overestimated compared to distances of cities located in the same parts of Germany. This trend was strengthened when participants had a negative attitude toward the reunification of Germany. The impact of these results is far reaching, because overestimated distances between both German parts indicate that there still exists a mental gap between East and West--even in young people--15 years after the German reunification.

Autobahn People: Distance Estimations Between German Cities Biased by Social Factors and the Autobahn

Re-analyses of a study on distance estimations between German cities [1] revealed that conclusions drawn from aggregated data sets can also be found on the individuals’ data level. It could be shown that mental barriers, here the former iron curtain which has been physically absent for 15 years, while still assuming a significant role in social interactions, are powerful predictors for psycholo...

A Numerical Modeling Study for Determining the Optimal Depth of Grout Curtain in Foundation and Abutments of Karun 4 Dam

Some experimental relations have been developed for determining the grout curtain depth, but these relations cannot be applied to any dam with any geological condition. Therefore, the effect of the grout curtain depth on seepage through foundation and abutments of each dam should be studied separately. To examine this parameter in Karun 4 dam, the numerical modeling method was applied using FLA...

Comparison of Two Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping Measurement Methods Used For Anatomical Localization of the Iron-Incorporated Deep Brain Nuclei

Introduction Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) is a new contrast mechanism in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The images produced by the QSM enable researchers and clinicians to easily localize specific structures of the brain, such as deep brain nuclei. These nuclei are targets in many clinical applications and therefore their easy localization is a must. In this study, we aimed to i...

Effect of Heat Recirculation in Biomass Flame Stability within a Cylindrical Micro-Combustor (TECHNICAL NOTE)

Flame stability inside a cylindrical micro-combustor was studied. Considering occurrence of heat recirculation, the respective relations were written and with parameters such as motion speed of reactants, flame propagation speed and thermal conductivity of the combustor’s wall, flame stability and its location inside micro-combustor were studied. It was found that for each thermal conductivity ...
